ALARM ADVICE · SWANSEA

Burglar & intruder alarms in Swansea. Your free survey, explained.

Choose an alarm around your property, the way you use it and the support you need. Here is what to consider before installing or upgrading a house or business alarm.

A survey comes before a specification

There is no single alarm system that fits every home or business. A useful survey considers entrances, vulnerable windows, the building’s construction and the people who use it. It also looks at valuable stock or equipment, existing wiring and any system requirements set by your insurer.

LA Alarms provides free, no-obligation surveys in Swansea and across South and West Wales. We discuss what you want the alarm to achieve and explain the equipment and support options before preparing a quotation.

What makes up an intruder alarm?

A typical installation combines a control panel, detection devices, a keypad or other means of control, and a sounder. Motion detectors and door or window contacts provide detection at the locations identified in the survey. The system needs to be specified as a whole, including its signalling and power arrangements.

A visible external sounder can provide a deterrent as well as an audible warning. Suitable systems can also provide mobile access or connect to an alarm receiving centre. We explain which functions are available with the equipment we recommend.

Wired, wireless or hybrid?

Wired systems connect devices to the panel through cabling. They can suit properties where wiring can be installed or reused. Wireless devices communicate by radio and can help reduce installation disruption. Hybrid systems combine approaches where appropriate.

For listed or heritage buildings, occupied homes and busy businesses, the impact of installation is part of the decision. Equipment still needs to be suitable for the location and maintained throughout its life. We assess the property rather than recommending a type based on appearance alone.

Audible alarms and monitored systems

An audible-only installation sounds a local warning when activated. A monitored system can also signal to a receiving centre, with an agreed process for contacting nominated keyholders and requesting an appropriate response. Police response is subject to the system and applicable arrangements; it should not be assumed for every alarm.

Consider who will respond if you are away, how you want to receive notifications and whether your insurer has specified a particular arrangement. We can explain the available options and their ongoing requirements.

Choosing the right system for a Swansea property

A terraced house, a large detached property and an industrial unit have different layouts and routines. Shops may need to protect stock rooms as well as entrances. A warehouse may need detection across a much larger area. The survey gives us the information needed to recommend coverage.

Maintenance is part of the installation

Preventive maintenance helps identify failing components, power problems and other faults. Correct use, appropriate detection and regular attention can also reduce avoidable false activations. Keep the system documentation and servicing records available.

The maintenance schedule depends on the installation and monitoring arrangements. LA Alarms offers ongoing service packages and explains the checks and support included. Contracted call-out arrangements are separate from normal office opening hours.

Upgrading or taking over an existing alarm

If you move into a property with an alarm, or want to change service provider, replacing every component may not be necessary. We can inspect the existing installation and advise whether it can be maintained, upgraded or integrated.

Possible changes include a panel upgrade, replacement detection, mobile access or new monitoring arrangements, subject to compatibility. We explain what can be retained and where replacement is justified.

Bringing alarm systems together

Intruder alarms can form part of a wider security installation with CCTV and access control. Commercial projects can also include fire detection and electrical work through LA Electrical. Coordinating these services helps plan installation and handover around one building.

Our projects include intruder alarms and CCTV at Kevin Thomas Pharmacies and Trojan Electronics, as well as a bespoke installation at Llandaff Cathedral. Explore the project examples or speak to our team about a property like yours.

What affects the cost of a burglar alarm?

Property size, detection coverage, the condition of existing equipment, installation access, signalling and monitoring all affect the quotation. A clear proposal should explain what is included in the installation and what ongoing costs apply to maintenance or monitoring.

We provide a tailored quotation after discussing your needs. You can ask questions about the proposed equipment and support before deciding how to proceed.
